Inspire Within Devotions

Scripture

A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.”
Proverbs 15:1, NIV

Encouragement

Have you ever said a harsh word in the heat of a moment that made the situation worst? We all have been there before because we are all sinful by nature. We tend to get upset and say the first thing that we feel, which isn’t always the kindest choice of words. Well, this verse in Proverbs speaks the truth when it says “a harsh word stirs up anger”. Thankfully the verse gives us wisdom when it says “a gentle answer turns away wrath”. A soft answer can calm a situation; a cruel answer can escalate the situation into a serious conflict. Let us choose kind words and gentle answers so that we might not stir up wrath.

Reflection

Think of a conflict where you said harsh words. What could you have said instead? Is there something you can do to resolve the situation or prevent a future situation from escalating? Pray and ask God to help you tame your tongue and think before you speak. Pray that His strength will help you be slow to anger.

Quote

"A soft answer can calm a situation; a cruel answer can escalate the situation into a serious conflict."
