Inspire Within Devotion

Scripture

The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?

Jeremiah 17:9, ESV

Encouragement

Be cautious of the saying, “Listen to your heart.” Scripture says that the heart is deceitful above all things. Since the fall of man, our hearts have been inclined to sin—it’s in our sinful nature. Listening to our sinful hearts often leads us to sin, but thanks be to the grace of God.

For don’t be despaired, God has provided a cure for our desperately sick hearts. The cure is God—Himself. Our hearts can be cleansed from sin because of God’s perfect plan of redemption to send us a Savior. Through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, our sick hearts are made NEW (2 Corinthians 5:17) and He given us a Helper, the Holy Spirit (John 14:15-31), to be our guide.

Reflection

Examine your heart. Is your heart following what you want or following the Lord. The Holy Spirit gives guidance, wisdom, and conviction for those times that temptation is strong. Listen to the Spirit, not your heart. Let us make God’s Word our guide in all things!

Quote
